Fellowship of the Unashamed: A Martyr’s Prayer

Recently I preached a sermon on the bonds of our heavenly citizenship from Philippians 3:20-4:3. As a part of that sermon, I shared the text of a note found in the desk of a pastor who was martyred in Zimbabwe more than 100 years ago.

You may have come across this before, but even if you have it is worth reading again for the powerful reminder that our citizenship is in heaven and that we are called to give our all for our King.

I am part of the fellowship of the unashamed. I have Holy Spirit power.

The die has been cast. I have stepped over the line. The decision has been made. I am a disciple of His. I won’t look back, let up, slow down, back away or be still.

My past is redeemed. My present makes sense. My future is secure. I’m finished with low living, sight walking, small planning, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tamed visions, worldly talking, cheap giving, and dwarfed goals.

I no longer need preeminence, prosperity, position, promotions, plaudity, or popularity. I don’t have to be right, first, tops, recognized, praised, regarded or rewarded. I now live by faith, lean on His presence, walk by patience, am uplifted by prayer and labor by power.

My pace is set. My gait is fast. My goal is heaven. My road is narrow. My way rough. My companions few.  My guide is reliable and my mission is clear.

I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, deluded or delayed.

I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of the adversary, negotiate at the table of the enemy, pander at the pool of popularity or meander in the maze of mediocrity.

I won’t give up, shut up, let up, until I’ve stayed up, stored up, prayed up, paid up, preached up for the cause of Christ.

I am a disciple of Jesus. I must go till He comes, give ’til I drop, preach till all know, and work till He stops me. And when He comes for His own, He’ll have no problem recognizing me. My banner will be clear!

May all of us count ourselves in the fellowship of the unashamed as we seek to live for Christ!

  1. Wowwwwwww
    What to say!
    Thank you
We thank the Lord for such a legacy.

    Blessings
Yes I also want to be a better Christian and a better missionary

  2. I was reading Our Daily Bread and September 9 mentioned The Martyr’s Prayer. I read it on September 11, the day after the tragedy in Utah, and it really touched me. I could only hope that the Lord uses me to continue to spread the Word of the Lord and our Savior, Jesus Christ.

  3. This is the first time I have seen the martyrs prayer. I read about it in the our daily bread devotional. I googled the martyr’s prayer and saw your website. Thank you for this gift, I hope it makes me a better Christian and a better disciple.

  4. I hereby apply to join the Fellowship of the Unashamed. May the Holy Spirit show me what is at risk in these attempts by Satan to “shame” the Elect of God ; so that I may ask any Accuser WHY they DARE to shame God’s chosen ones. I want to stand with the likes of Abraham – who, knowing that all of the LORD’s promises were bound up in his one and only Son of Promise (Isaac), decided to OBEY his God and offer up that son – in effect declaring that the promise of God will prevail … even over death. I want to pray, as the Lord Jesus prayed in the midst of His own personal grief (John 12:20-50, and especially verses 27-28), “Father – glorify Your name” ~ and received the assuring answer, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again”.

  5. I belong to the Fellowship of the unashamed. God brought me to this planet to fulfill my destiny. God is my redeemer, anchor, protector, guardian, and sustainer. I will live for God and God alone. So help me God.
